Before undergoing the LASIK surgery, you must get a thorough examination to determine whether your eyes are healthy and suitable for the procedure. To prepare for the examination:
  • Stop using your contact lenses before the examination. For soft lenses, you should refrain from using it at least 7 days prior to the exam, and for hard lenses, at least three weeks. This is important because long term usage of contact lenses often changes the shape of the cornea and thus it needs time in order to return to its original shape.
  • You should have someone drive you to the hospital because your physician will dilate your pupils, and it may cause side effects such as blurry vision or inability to withstand bright light, which can impair your driving ability. Your pupils should return back to its normal size after about 4 hours.
The physician begins by performing preliminary examinations and then perform the LASIK surgery:
  • A health exam is first conducted to ensure suitability for the operation (e.g. no viral or bacteria infection, glaucoma, etc.)
  • A detailed eye exam is then conducted to assess
  • Curvature of the cornea and pupil - If the pupil is too large, the physician may correct it by performing Custom LASIK (Wavefront) procedure to reduce the dispersement of light.
  • Physical chracteristics of the eye To analyze for high degree of astigmatism or for Keratoconus, a degenerative disease of the cornea that causes it to gradually thin and bulge into a cone-like shape.
  • Thickness of the cornea If your cornea is too thin, it may not be possible to correct your vision entirely through LASIK surgery.
  • Actual prescription and condition of the retina To obtain accurate measures, the pupils must be dilated.
Once all the preparation is done, the physician merely use antiseptic eye drops and perform the LASIK surgery which takes no more than 10-15 minutes for each eye.
