Barium Enema is an examination of the large intestine to check for abnormality, such as tumor, skin outgrowth, ulcers, obstruction, and intussusception. The exam involves instilling barium sulfate (a contrast medium) into the colon through the rectum and taking X-ray of the colon.
Preparing for the exam:

Patient must take 30 cc of laxative at bedtime on the night prior to the exam |

|
Refrain from eating at least 6 hours before the exam |

|
If there are any stools in the colon, it must be removed prior to the exam. | | |
