Amniocentesis is a diagnostic
procedure performed by withdrawing a small amount of amniotic fluid from
the sac surrounding the fetus in order to use to check for chromosome
abnormalities, inherited disorders, or neural tube defects. Physicians
often perform this exam in pregnant woman that is at risk of passing the
abnormalities or disorders to the unborn fetus. It is normally done during
15th - 16th weeks of pregnancy.
Preparing for the exam: Urinate before the exam. |
During the exam:

The physician performs an ultrasound exam to find a safe site for the needle to enter. |

The abdomen is cleansed with an antiseptic. The physician withdraws about 20 cc of amniotic fluid using a long, hollow needle and sends the sample fluid to the laboratory. | |
After the exam: Patients rests for 15 - 20 minutes | |
