Ultrasound of the lower
abdomen for women is an imaging procedure used to examine the
internal organs of the lower abdomen including the bladder, uterus,
and ovaries, or to examine the monthly ovulation. The ultrasound
machine sends out high-frequency sound waves that reflect off body
structures to create a picture. There are two approaches in
conducting the exam:
Transabdominal -
The ultrasound transducer (a hand-held
probe) is placed on the skin of the abdomen. It is used for
unmarried female patients or those who have surgically removed
their uterus and ovaries. |
Transvaginal -
The ultrasound transducer (a hand-held
probe) is inserted directly into the vagina. It is therefore
closer to pelvic structures than with the transabdominal
technique. It is used for married female patients who did not
surgically remove their uterus and ovaries.
