Transcatheter Oily
Chemoembolization (TOCE) is a type of chemotherapy that goes
directly to the cancerous tumor through a small tube that feeds
directly to the liver and subsequently to the tumor. This is an
alternate approach for cancer treatment without undergoing
surgery. | |
Preparing for the procedure:
|
|
Patient must refrain from eating and drinking at
least 6 hours before the prior to the procedure. |
|
|
Patient must rest at the hospital at least 2 hours before the procedure. |
|
|
Patient must inform the physician of any diseases
or conditions that you have, such as allergies, asthma, heart
disease, and history of allergies to specific medicine and
seafood. | |
During the procedure:
|
The physician inserts a
small tube (catheter) into the hepatic artery (in the upper leg
area), which carries a special contrast medium and chemotherapeutic
agent to the liver and subsequently to the tumor. An X-Ray is then
taken. | |
After the procedure:
|
|
After the procedure, the patient should lie flat
on their back for about 6 hours while keeping their leg, the side
which the injection was done, straight. |
|
|
The patient should place a sand pillow on top of
the injection site for about 6
hours. | |
